The Higher Education Minister said that universities face years of reduced public funding after millions of pounds were slashed from their budgets.
Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary announced that £398 million would be taken from the higher education budget this year before Christmas. He angered university leaders by saying that the cuts would improve their institutions by spurring them to find new funding and to focus on teaching and research.
Universities are warned not to expect extra government money, or to rely on the tuition fee review to boost their income. Instead they should diversify and find fresh income from the private sector.
