Industry bodies and market research groups have played down the threat of sustained inflation on the high street. Over the last half year, people have experienced a pretty stable shop price inflation. Recently, there has been a slight increase in the food inflation. It is expected that in spite of the soaring prices for wheat and cocoa, food prices won’t experience similar spikes. While commodity price increases were passed onto retail prices during the previous inflationary hikes, subsequent falls haven’t been similarly passed on. The grocery market remains highly competitive, limiting the capability of passing on raw material increases in full.
