Tesco Takes Mobiles War Against Carphone Warehouse
Saturday, April 18, 2009 16:30
Tesco will report record annual profits of about £3 billion this week.
As the sales growth in traditional groceries has been slowing, the supermarket is launching new strategy to expand. As part of this strategy, the supermarket plans to challenge the market leadership of Carphone Warehouse via opening new instore phone shops in 2009. By next March, Tesco will have opened more than 100 shops selling mobile and land-line packages in its largest stores and it is looking to be open for business in all 210 of its Tesco Extra sites two or three years after that.
Meanwhile, this week, Carphone will announce how it plans to press ahead with a demerger of its Talk Talk broadband arm from the retail side.
