UK’s biggest supermarket group—Tesco secretly purchased a town centre via a front company and let it become essentially derelict in an approach to secure a landmark regeneration deal.
Three years ago, Tesco won applause from councillors and local residence when it brought the centre of Linwood in Renfrewshire, and promised to redevelop its crubling 1960s shopping precinct.
Community leaders complained that under Tesco’s ownership, the precinct had deteriorated so badly that it was dubbed Scotland’s Basra. The acquisition from the Edinburgh-based Balmore Properties came after a “Boot out Balmore” campaign led by these community leaders.
