    • ]]>     Ministers were facing mounting anger from union leaders and academics after it was announced universities were to face further multimillion-pound funding cuts.
    Lord Mandelson, the business secretary announced that university budgets would be slashed by a further £135m for the next year.
    In his annual grant letter to the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Lord Mandelson said the cuts were needed to pay for the “higher than expected cost” of funding grants and loans for the record number of students going to university during the recession.
    Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison, said the news of further cuts was “shocking news for the students and staff”. He said that the cuts will do long-term damage to the economy.
