    • ]]>     Sterling received some respite, pulling away from a 10-month low against the dollar as stronger-than-expected UK economic data gave the pound a lift.
    Figures indicated that UK consumer confidence rose in February to its highest level ever since the start of 2008, while a survey of activity in the UK services sector came in far stronger than forecast, hitting its highest level ever since the beginning of 2007.
    The pound also received support on reports that Prudential, the UK insurer, might not complete its $35bn purchase of the Ssian unit of the stricken US insurer—AIG.
