Strike Threat Over Council Wages

Public sector workers warned yesterday of strike action if the council try to freeze their pay. Walkouts by local authority staff could cripple such vital services as schools, nurseries and rubbish collections. But news of the potential action caused anger at a time when thousands of private sector employees are being forced to forgo salary increase.Council chiefs in Edinburgh and Glasgow are understood to be pressing for a pay freeze in 2010, as they battle multi-million pound black hole in their budgets.Unions said that it might spark a period of conflict.
