Social Enterprises Get Ready to Boom
Wednesday, July 7, 2010 13:43Government is planning to put social enterprises at the heart of its ‘big society’ reforms to mark a major change for socially responsible businesses.
However, campaigners have warned that there must be a push to teach the public about how these companies differ from more traditional enterprises and charities.
The Government has announced that it wants to involve social enterprises, mutuals as well as co-operatives much more in the operation of public services, including allowing public sector workers to form employee-owned co-operatives and the creation of a ‘big society bank’ to provide more finance for neighbourhood groups, charities as well as social enterprises.
Social enterprises have welcomed the proposals. However, according to a recent poll, it is found that there iswidespread public ignorance about social enterprises.
