As repeatedly mentioned previously, appropriate differentiation can lead to a business success. To establish a well planed strategy is hard, but once established, it will have incredible power.
Depending on the nature of the businesses, the differentiation approaches might vary accordingly during the implementation process. However, when a business is targeting a market, no matter it’s a niche market or a crowded one, some key issues concerning the differentiation strategy remain pretty much the same.
First of all, the needs to convince the customers of where and how you differ from the others are the same for businesses with different targeting. Secondly, to keep the customers well informed about available new product or new idea that can meet their need is a very important part in all kinds of differentiation strategies. Thirdly, to persuade the customers to pick your offering out of the range of similar merchants are always vital. And last but not least, it is always tough job to convince people of that you can serve them in a more personal manner while your advertising mix is designed in the same way as other competing businesses.
To sum up, though the actually approaches will be slightly adjusted in form to meet different operational environment, the guiding core principles of differentiation strategies, which should be remembered before making the strategic plans, are almost the same, for small businesses and big ones alike.
