In spite of the intense pressure from motorists’ groups, the Government is pressing ahead with a planned rise in fuel duty of 2p a liter.
The spiraling oil prices threaten to combine with this to push the cost of a liter of petrol up by 5p in total. It puts an extra £120 a year on fuel costs for the average two-car family. Following the hikes in April and December, this rise in petrol duty will be the third rise in nine months. At the start of 2009, prices at the pumps were around 85p a liter, but have climbed to around 105p now. And it is feared that they could hit 110p a liter within weeks.
Surveys have indicated that some 80% of motorists believe that given the condition of some of the country’s roads, the current level of tax on motorists is too high. Besides, some 83% did not believe the revenue was re-invested sufficiently in the right areas.
