Retail Sales Surge Surprises City

Tow of the UK’s biggest retailers have surprised the City by sushing out upbeat trading statements, surggesting that the consumer economy is not as frail as some observers have suggested.
Next, the clothing chain, and Wm Morrison, the supermarket, both announced that recent trading ahd been far better than expected, causing analysts to upgrade their full-year profit forecasts.
Next said that the recent hot weather had pushed sales up by between 2percent and 3percent. It increased internal profit forecasts fro both the first and second halves by £15m each, and said that like-for-like sales over the 25 weeks to July were far better than forecast.
Meanwhile shares in Wm Morrison rose by 8percent after the Bradford-based supermarket said that its full-year results would be ahead of expectations.
