Retail Sales Fall ‘Worse than Feared’
Thursday, March 26, 2009 15:59
In January, driven by cut-price clearance activity, the retail sales rose by 0.8%. However, the experts have warned of worse to come.
According to official figures revealed today, as the recession tightened its grip, steep falls in demand for non-food goods sent retail sales plummeting by 1.9% in Febury. According to the Office for National Statistics, the fall in volumes between January and February comes as sales fell across all sectors. The situation was far worse than economists have expected. Clothing and footwear sales has dropped by 3.7%, while sales in most small businesses selling goods such as books and DVDs suffered their worst decline ever since January 2005.
