Prudent Posting
Sunday, November 22, 2009 6:05The Internet has a deeper societal role than just checking the cricket score. It is about sourcing information, sharing photographs and paying bills. As employees spend ever more time in the office, it is worth being flexible about allowing access to personal sites, rather than imposing a general ban.
Most firms have a policy that allows personal use of Internet sites first things in the morning, last thing in the evening, and during the lunch hour. Allowing access to such sites helps staff work their contacts to get useful business tips, which benefits the firm and the individual.
Policies that are explicit about not writing anything sensitive or company-specific online give the employer legal recourse should staff abuse the privilege of access.
Allowing access to these sites also means that heralding company success is as easy as an update on Twitter or a blog post. This can be great PR for the firm; indeed, some companies hire investment writers specifically to write online economic and business updates.
