As a move is likely to unsettle neighbours, China plans to resume double-digit growth of its official defence spending in 2011. This is concerned by China’s rapid military modernisation and never more assertive attitude.
The draft defence budget, which is subject to approval by the National People’s Congress, was RMB 601.1 billion. It was up by 12.7% from actual spending in 2010.
Tokyo showed broader concerns when it orered a refocusing of its military on the perceived threat from China’s growing military power. Other countries have also grown more nervous of the rapid modernization of the People’s Liberation Army.
