Pitting Search Directories Against Search Engines

Compared to search engines, the overall process of working with online directories is quite different. Before starting working with directories, it should be helpful for you to know a few basic things about directories.
First of all, directories don’t send searchbots out onto the Web looking for sites to add, and most big directories don’t have automated submitting programs.
Secondly, online directories don’t actually read and store information from Web pages within a site. As a result, they don’t base search results on the contents of the Web pages.
Thirdly, the perfect fit for one’s information needs may be sitting somewhere on a site that is included in a directory, but one won’t get to know about it, as the directories don’t index individual Web pages. But they index Web sites, assigning each site to a particular category. There is no way for someone to search individual pages within a site with directories and categorization is necessarily limited.
