Most holidays pass without major accidents, but lost or stolen baggage, cancelled flights and travel delays can all leave one out of pocket. The other main consideration is medical cover. If you visit a country in the EEA, you might be entitled to free or reduced healthcare fee, but costs for other aspects such as bringing you home, won’t be covered. So, if you’ve booked your holiday, you should find an insurance policy for the trip just in case of unexpected incident.
In order to find the right insurance cover, here are a few questions to answer in advance:
1. Where are you going?
Not all insurance policies cover all countries, and the further you go, the more you will need in medical expenses cover, as it will cost more if you have to be brought home.
2. Who needs cover?
Family policies often work out cheaper than buying individual policies. Annual muti-trip policies can also be a good idea if you have several holidays a year.
3. How long should the policy last?
If you are only going away for a couple of days, don’t buy an insurance policy that cover a longer period. If you are going for longer, make sure it covers your whole stay.
4. What’s covered?
Pre-existing medical conditions are not usually covered. However, an additional premium could take care of such issue. ANy adventurous activities and equipment should be covered too. And you will need sufficient cover for cancellation or curtailment of your holiday as well as costs to get you home safely in any emergency. Meanwhile, it is also important to get cover for lost belongings, money and passports or other travel documents.
5. Who’s your contact?
Your policy should provide a 24-hour emergency helpline.
