With the launch of an index-linked corporate bond aimed at UK retail investors, UK’s power supplier–National Grid is now looking to tap into concerns over high inflation.
According to the London Stock Exchange, National Grid’s newly launched bond will become the first index-linked corporate bond that is issued to the UK retail investor market by a non-financial company. Besides, it will also become the first retail bond issue ever since the beginning of summer.

Gap in US Pension Plans Hits $388bn

According to a new analysis by Credit Suisse, the funding hole in US corporate pension schemes has opened as the combination of weak equity markets and falling interest rates has eliminated the improvements in the funding of S&P 500 companies’ defined-benefit pension scheme.
Currently, the pension gap of $388bn gap is much bigger than it used to be at the height of the financial crisis. It leaves the pension schemes with assets worth only 77% of their liabilities.

Telefónica to Axe its Spanish Division

TelefónicaThe largest telecoms operator in the eurozone by market value–Telefónica is going to cut down its Spanish division as a standalone business and establish a new digital division in London as part of the group’s largest restructurings ever since the company went privatised.
Telefónica Spain, the historic key part of the previous Spanish state operator and currently one of its three core divisions, will be folded into its European business. Large blocks of decision-making and strategic power will be transferred away from Spain.

Baidu Prepares Mobile Operating System

China’s largest online search company, Baidu, who holds a share of more than 70% of China’s online search market by revenues, took its first step towards launching a mobile operating system in an attempt to extend its dominant position in the Chinese market to the growing business sector of mobile phone.
According to Baidu, it is announced that the software platform–Baidu Yi will allow the consumers to use search-related apps on mobile devices fast and easily. Though the current version of the system is based on Google’s Android open source software, it is quite likely that Baidu will launch its own operating system in the future.
Baidu was already in talks with app developers, smartphone makers as well as manufacturers of key components like chipsets for the new platform.
