Nokia to Cut 3,500 Jobs and Close Plant

The Finnish handset maker–Nokia is going to cut down 3500 jobs and close a manufacturing factory in Romania, as the world’s largest maker of mobile phones by volume went on the evolution to deal with the growing influence of smartphones on its markets.
According to the company, it is said that the closure of the plant in Cluj would cause 2200 job losses, with another 1300 to be cut in the area and Commerce division.

Facebook Media Apps Raise Privacy Concerns

Users will then be able to read an article on a news site or listen to a song while automatically sharing them with all of their friends. This action means that the advertisers will be looking to use Facebook members’ activities as endorsements.
However, privacy campaigners warned that the social networking site is not making users fully aware of how it plans to collect information concerning the users’ reading and listening habits from new entertainment and media applications. There will be privacy concerns raising over such approach.

Chinese Operating Systems ‘No Threat’ to Google

Over the last few months, Chinese IT companies including Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent have been moving into an area dominated by the US group’s Android platform. This has brought questions over what could mean for Google’s big success in China.
Google’s Android operating system has achieve great success in mainland China. According to a senior industry executive, it is revealed that such result is not due to the threat from a host of mobile operating systems being unleashed in the country as they will be “niche” products.
However, according to chief financial officer of MediaTek–David Ku, it is indicated that the phones based on these new operating systems won’t have wider appeal as they are primarily designed to push the mobile users towards using the services of one company exclusively.

Anadarko Sounds out Brazil Buyers

Anadarko PetroleumIn the latest effort to attract investment in Brazil, the US independent oil and gas explorer–Anadarko Petroleum has asked advisers to sound out the potential buyers for a collection of its oil assets in the region in a deal which could value up to $5bn.
As one of the world’s largest oil and gas explorer, Anadarko has instructed bankers including Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Scotia Waterous to find buyers for a portfolio of oilfields. According to people familiar with the situation, it is said that this could be valued between $3bn-$5bn.
Though the marketing process is still in its early stages, the sale is expected to attract interest from oil majors and national oil companies in the Asian area.
