American Airlines Considers Merger Options

According to chief excutive of American Airlines–Tom Horton, it was announced in an internal letter that the airline group would explore a potential merger with another carrier as a move towards further consolidation in the US airlines industry.
A tie-up between AMR, the parent company of American Airlines, and another carrier will come on the heels of the merger of United and Continental, which created the biggest US carrier. However, according to people familiar with the issue, it is said that the company was not set on a merger and that it was also pursuing a restructuring plan that would keep the company independent.

BMW to Expand Mini Production in Europe

According to the German premium carmaker, it was announced that the company was in talks to start making some of its Mini cars at a plant used by Mitsubishi Motors in the Netherlands as the Oxford plant that produces the small-car brand was reaching its full production capacity.
BMW announced that it would invest another fund of £250m in its UK operations by the year of 2015 because it expands the brand to include up to 10 models in the midterm.

Galaxy Lifts Samsung Q2 Profit to a Record

The South Korean company–Samsung Electronics, which is the world’s largest smartphone maker by sales, has been powered to a record operating profit in the second quarter due to the strong sales of the Galaxy smartphone. However, shares of Samsung fell in spite of the strong performance as investors are concerned that the earnings momentum might be peaking.
According to Samsung, it was estimated in April-June guidance that its operating profit for the period was Won6.7tn, which was up by 79% from the same quarter ain 2011, and projected sales of Won47tn compared with last year’s figure of Won39.4tn.
