Job Losses in RBS Just Started

Government ownership of the banks will never be easy.
However, the UK Financial Investments has a 70% stake and sacked 9000 people worldwide. Having barely escaped from the economic crisis, the UK government now faces the alarming prospect of a bank. It means that it is better for the government as the banks are managed at arm’s length.
For 4500 people in the UK, who will face the risk of dismissal of a further if all the decisions were being made by the Treasury when the living costs are soaring, it could never be happy news.
The real worry is that this is just the start of a funeral pyre of bank jobs.
After the bank recorded a loss of £7.9bn and writing off £16.2bn of goodwill, it is necessary though brutal it may seem.
It is clear that Stephen Hester, RBS’s chief executive, is determined to restore profitability at RBS as soon as possible.

I usually read a blog for at least two month or three carefully before deciding to add it as part of my regular feed reader (RSS) line-up. Time is money and I like to get a feel for the blog before I make the commitment to add a blog to the one I check everyday. But in rare cases I would like to make exceptions. The Investing blog is one of those exceptions.

Barely over 2 years old this blog has already impressed me with not only the quality of their writing but the well researched rich investing information such as Stocks, Forex, Hedge funds, futures and commodities.

Further more, almost daily market news help out our general investing trend. It really fresh my mind when every post come out, gives me not only an overview of the investing market, but also detail in deeply explain the principal. Covering such topics as commodities, Forex, stock analysis, and the economy the Investing blog provides just the type of analysis investors and traders should be reading and learning from. A fine example of how Investing Blog can help the investor or trader is found in this very useful post.

Overall, I recommend the Investing Blog as one that should be read regularly.

Water Giants to Hit Households with Greater Bills

Wednesday, April 8, 2009 21:46
Posted in category News

In spite of the great pressures on households’ finances, utilities have proposed average rises of £23 over the coming five years.
The biggest hike of £48 was proposed by Thames Water, while Southern Water, Bristol Water and Sutton & East Surrey are to rises of between £42 and £44 from 2009-10 to 2014-15. This proposal of sustained, above-inflation rises in prices has sparked a major battle between the firms and consumer groups.
After demanding swingeing hikes in customer bills, Water companies were accused of being ‘robber barons’. They are stepping into ‘dangerous’ territory given soaring unemployment and faltering household incomes
However, the companies defended the proposed charges via arguing that they are necessary to improve drinking water, maintain pipes as well as sewers and combat leakage. But some companies will face further controversy as they seek to combine hikes in bills with lower-than- expected investment plans.

ITN Facing Extinction Over Pension Shortfall

The auditors of ITN, the company behind News At Ten and Channel 4 News, have warned that may go under if the news provider fails to plug a black hole in its pension fund.
As a rusult of the worring shortfall on the company’s retirement scheme of £320m, ITN has been questioned if it can survive in its current form. According to Deloitte, the material uncertainty that casts serious doubt about the company’s capability to go on was represented by the widening deficit represented as a going concern.
ITN admitted last night that the company has started a three-yearly review of the pension scheme, which is likely to reveal a ’substantial’ deficit.

Hextalls Facing Collapse

Wednesday, April 8, 2009 16:09
Posted in category News

The market downturn has already claimed the scalps of leading banks and insurance giants. Now the lawyers become worried that it might come to their turn.
The leading law company is a key adviser to AIG. The firm has some high profile clients. It numbered 20 partners and 90 staff just a few months ago and figures for the year ending April 2008 showed a healthy profit of £1.8m.
However, it is now engaged in a desperate battle to stave off its own collapse. The number of partners has been slashed and a consultation process has been started to lay off some support staff It is a sensitive time. Senior partners from the top-200 firm are set to call in the administrators. They are hoping to buy back key parts of the business in a pre-pack administration process.
The collapse of a sizeable law firm was almost unheard of until now. Though it is likely the firm will be reborn in another form, it will set larm bells ringing in the City.
