PrintGeorge Osborne was criticised for locking the taxpayer into a loss of at least £400m on Northern Rock after agreeing the sale of the bank to Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin empire for £750m. It is said that Osborne had lost taxpayers hundreds of millions via pushing for a quick sale as well as undermining hopes of a resurgence in the mutual banking sector by denying customers a stake in the business.
According to Osborne, it is argued that the sale of the Newcastle-based lender will raise £747m for the Treasury. This amount could rise to £1bn if certain conditions are met. Last year, it was highly expected that the sale would generate £2bn for the taxpayer. However, the drop in property prices has forced down the bank’s asset value to £1.2bn.

crab bucket SyndromeCrab bucket usually has no top lid at all. If there was only one crab in the bucket, it would certainly escape. However, when there is more than one crab in the bucket, if one tries to crawl out, the other crabs would pull it back down so that it would share the same fate as the rest of them.
In the business world, similar phenomenon exists, reflecting negativity and low level of business ethics among different organizations. It is called as the Crab Bucket Syndrome, or Crab Syndrome. It happens when the members within an organization are short-sighted and only focus on their own benefits. If one person within the organization tries to improve himself, others will attempt to drag him back down to the same level with them.
So, if you are looking to achieve success in your life, you will need to ignore the other “crabs”.
