The Icelandic Government needs UK’s help in trawling through the wreckage of Kaupthing, Glitnir and Landsbanki, which has crashed in autumn 2008 and had to be nationalized. According to some estimates, two-thirds of the business loans made by these banks were to UK borrowers.
It is expected that a decision will be made within weeks on whether to launch a full-blown inquiry into UK aspects of alleged wrongdoing inside Iceland’s failed banking system. Besides, UK may lend a top fraud investigator to the authorities of Icelandic to assist with pinning down evidence of widespread financial crime.

Emerging Opportunities in New Markets

Morgan Stanley, the investment bank, predicted last week that the Footsie 100 would break through 6000 sometime next year. However, most fund managers are still far less confident.
The emerging markets have been quicker to bounce back from the sharp falls of last autumn than Western countries. India’s total debt is just under one fifth of GDP and China’s is just over one tenth, while UK’s debt is 3.3 times GDP. The average global emerging markets fund has lost 13% of its value over 2008, but has risen 20% over the past six months. In comparison, the average fund in the UK All Companies sector is still indicating losses over the past six months, down 1.1%. Over a year the sector is down 20%.
As a result, a lot of investors are looking to newer markets like Brazil, India and China. But investing in emerging markets certainly has risks. Political interference and unpredictable legal systems can all make it very hard to do business.

Credit Crisis Measure Libor Nears ‘Normality’

Friday, August 14, 2009 20:49
Posted in category Banking and Finance, News

The financial crisis has caused the disappearance of many high street banking names including Bradford & Bingley and Alliance & Leicester. According to critics, it is said that the lenders are taking advantage of the lack of competition in the lending markets to boost profits.
With the further sharp falls of ten basis points from 0.87% to 0.77% in the three-month sterling Libor rate, which is a key lending rate between banks influencing the price of some types of mortgage deals, banks and building societies are to come under increasing pressure to cut their rates on mortgages. However, the banks have been criticized for failing to pass on in full the reductions in the bank rate and the lower costs of borrowing via Libor.
The British Bankers’ Association argues that its members now face higher costs such as the costs with banks required to hold more capital.
