Country Homes Beat Town Houses in Slump

As properties in the countryside have beaten than their urban counterparts in the property slump, the rolling hills of South Oxfordshire have becomed the most expensive rural area. According to a survey performed by Halifax, the price gap between rural and urban properties has increased by 5%, with houses in the countryside now 21% higher than the ones in the urban areas.
Though the properties in both areas have both fallen in price over the past 12 months, rural areas saw drops of only 13% in comparison to the slumps of 18% in built-up areas. In the comprehensive study of property sales over the past year, it was found that South Oxfordshire became the most expensive rural local authority area, with the average property valued at £307,518, which is a staggering 51% above the national rural average.
Rural areas in the South are now becoming the reserve of the middle-classes, as the lower-income households are unable to afford houses outside of urban areas. Figures used to illustrate how affordable housing in a region is, where average earnings for the area are offset against the property prices in question, indicate that the North-South divide is as marked as ever.
Of the ten most affordable rural areas in the UK, all are north of Birmingham and two are in Scotland. In the opposite, eight of the ten least affordable rural areas are in the South West, and eight of the ten most expensive rural areas fall south of the Wash.
