University Cuts Will Last Years

Monday, January 25, 2010 12:11
Posted in category Education

The Higher Education Minister said that universities face years of reduced public funding after millions of pounds were slashed from their budgets.
Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary announced that £398 million would be taken from the higher education budget this year before Christmas. He angered university leaders by saying that the cuts would improve their institutions by spurring them to find new funding and to focus on teaching and research.
Universities are warned not to expect extra government money, or to rely on the tuition fee review to boost their income. Instead they should diversify and find fresh income from the private sector.

Schools to Spend £10000 on YouTube for Pupils

youtube_logoSchools and councils are planning to spend thousands of pounds so that classes can access videos on YouTube.
Up to now, most schools have blocked access to the video-sharing website due to concerns about exposing pupils to violent or sexual content. But teachers say that the blanket ban restricts their teaching and prevents them from accessing a mass of educational material on the website.
Dozens of town halls and hundreds of schools plan to spend up to £10000 a year each on a filter that removes comments on videos and related films. It allows teachers to recommend video content to be placed in a library for other schools with the software to access.
Teachers say that they would use YouTube to access videos of scientific experiments that are too dangerous or complex to perform in the classroom, scenes from Shakespeare’s plays and footage of other cultures or foreign landscapes. The system is dependent on teachers submitting videos for approval. It then filters out content surrounding the footage and links to other films. A selection of suitable material is then created for other staff to use and for pupils to look at.
Hundreds of schools and 30 local authorities are in talks to buy the filter, which costs between £2500 and £10000 a year, depending on the number of computers being used. At least 60 councils already use the other web filtering services on offer.

Fears for Cadbury Jobs, Despite Food Giant’s Vow

American food giant Kraft has renewed its pledge to save Keynsham’s chocolate factory after agreeing an £11.5 billion takeover of Cadbury.
But the company’s final offer, recommended to shareholders by Cadbury directors, does not include a key statement by Kraft’s chairman which had previously put that promise in writing.
Kraft’s September submission for a £10.2bn buy-out contained a reference to the otherwise doomed Somerdale factory by the company’s chief executive and chairman, Irene Rosenfeld, saying she hoped it would continue to operate following any takeover. That comment is absent from the final offer published on Tuesday, which makes no reference to Keynsham at all in a 33-page document.
Kraft has said its commitment to Keynsham still stands, but local MPs have raised concerns over whether the food firm will be able to deliver on its promises. Mr. Dan Norris, whose Wansdyke constituency includes the Somerdale plant, hopes to meet Kraft bosses in the next few days to hold them to a commitment on the 400 jobs remaining there.
