Falling high street rentals and the low value of the pound are making UK increasingly attractive to Spanish retailers, who are suffering a tough time in their home market, with consumer spending in freefall.
Zara, Massimo Dutti, Desigual and Mango all have plans to expand in 2010 in the UK. Other Spanish companies, including Tous, the jeweler and accessories company; Camper, the designer shoe retailer; and Neck and Neck, the children’s clothing company, are planning for new stores as well.
Paola Cuneo, of Think London, a government body that encourages foreign companies to come to the capital, said that, apart from the financial incentives, another reason is the number of tourists and shoppers who come here. Over Christmas, shoppers spent £1 billion in two weeks. It is attractive to lots of companies.
According to the Spain Official Credit Institute, Spain is facing its worst economic crisis for decades. Spanish shops were offering 50% discounts to tempt shoppers in the January sales.

GOLDMAN_SACHSThe 100 most senior employees at Goldman Sachs in London will have their total pay capped at £1 million when the Wall Street bank reveals its 2009 bonuses this week, in a nod to the Government’s calls for cutbacks in bankers’ pay.
Less senior British employees who are awarded more than £1 million for their work in 2009 will have 60% of any amount over £1 million paid in deferred stock, in line with the guidelines of FSA.
The 32500 workers of Goldman Sachs across the world will share the burden of UK’s one-off 50% tax on bonuses above £25000, which is likely to cut the bank’s compensation pool by hundreds of millions of dollars. According to analysts, it is estimated that the tax sliced about £300 million from the pay pool of JP Morgan was £9.3 billion for last year.
Goldman Sachs will inform bankers of their individual pay packets in the coming week.

Research has shown that, intense competition for graduate jobs is fuelling record applications for big companies.
The biggest recruiters of graduates received unprecedented numbers of applications last year and are expecting even more this summer. Thousands of top graduates are expected to miss out on places.
Job interviews are under way for those graduating this summer, but many of the jobs will have already been filled by those who failed to find positions last year.
A survey by the research company High Fliers suggested that graduate vacancies will rise by 12% this year, after falling 18% in 2009. Yet supply may outstrip demand; tens of thousands of graduates have applied for the biggest four accountancy firms alone.
This year’s next biggest recruiters will be the Armed Forces and Teach First, which trains talented graduates to teach in inner-city schools.

Introduction to Breast Reduction Surgery

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 10:44
Posted in category Featured

Breast reduction surgery (medical term: reduction mammoplasty) is the removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts. It is generally performed as a treatment to macromastia (i.e. having breasts that are disproportionately large with respect to the body size). Macromastia can have the following negative effects on the health and lifestyle of women:

    1. Back neck and shoulder pain
    2. Irritation beneath the breasts (rashes)
    3. Deep furrows in the shoulders, caused by bra straps that have been weighed down by the heavy breasts
    4. Low-hanging breasts and stretched skin
    5. Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain
    6. Poor posture
    7. Restricted activity
    8. Low self-esteem
    9. Difficulty fitting into bras and clothing

Women who experience the above symptoms are good candidates for breast reduction surgery. Additionally, women who have one breast larger than the other might also wish to undergo breast reduction. The added advantage of reducing the amount of tissue in the breasts is the reduction of breast cancer risk (although this is not a method to reduce cancer risk).

The breast reduction surgery can be a very simple procedure, depending on your personal situation. It can be over in a matter of hours or you may have to stay overnight. The procedure is as follows:

    1. Anesthesia (usually general anesthesia is needed).
    2. Incision (various techniques are used)
    3. Removal of tissue and repositioning of nipple and areola
    4. Closing of incisions (placing of sutures deep inside the breast tissue)
    5. Managing post-operative pain and swelling

After the surgery, dressings and bandages are applied to the incisions. A surgical bra may be used to support the breasts during the healing process. A small tube may be inserted in the breast skin to drain away excess blood or fluid that may collect. The surgeon is likely to give you specific instructions on how to care for your breasts during the healing process. This includes movement restrictions (less exertion), medications to apply or take orally and daily observation to look for signs of infection. Complete rest is needed after the intervention. Thus, you should be prepared to take at least one week off work. It you are able, more rest will accelerate the healing process. Moreover, after surgery, you should wear non-constrictive clothes and bras (loose-fitting and soft).

The results of breast reduction are usually long-lasting. However, the size of the breasts may fluctuate as a result of ageing, weight changes, hormonal changes and pregnancy. Breasts will normally increase in size during pregnancy and subsequent breastfeeding. Most women, however, return back to their original size after weaning their child.

As regards to costs of a breast reduction procedure, it is extremely variable. Most surgeons take the following factors into account in addition to their own fees:

  • Surgical facility costs
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Medications
  • Post-surgery garments
  • Medical tests

If breast reduction is done in response to macromastia (and not solely for cosmetic reasons) the cost of breast reduction may be reimbursed by health insurance.

Scrap Forced Retirement

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 7:24
Posted in category News

RetirementMillions of older people will be able to lengthen their working lives under proposals from the equalities watchdog to scrap the compulsory retirement age of 65.
It says that the current law discriminates against older people, and that extending the working lives of older people would pump £15 billion into Britain’s ailing economy.
The equalities and Human Rights Commission has promised to make reform of the retirement age the focus of its pre-election campaigning, intensifying pressure on all parties to adopt it as policy in their manifestos.
The EHRC proposals are backed by a survey into older workers’ aspirations. A quarter of men and two thirds of women aged over 50 say that they want to carry on working beyond the state pension age. Although demand for flexible work was high, the survey found that plenty of employees were unhappy at being offered only lower-level part-time work beyond 65. Twice as may want to be promoted as want to downshift.
