Gold Investment

Gold BullionWhy should you still have gold?
Consider first the long term I remain totally convinced by the gold story.

I can not help but think that going the credit-based, fiat money system under which we work, bad ends. Winston Churchill said: “All previous attempts have money solely on intangible base such as credit or government edict or Fiat ended in inflationary panic and disaster.”

Simple, we have burdened us with too much debt at almost every level of society, from government to individual companies. The easiest way out is a kind of devaluation of the currency.

Whether this step by step, as we have seen in the last 12 months, (a pound to buy a lot less than a year) or comes in a sudden collapse has remains to be seen.

The former is more likely in my view. This has been the pattern of the last 100 years. Even real estate prices have been constant in sterling terms, 2009-10, although they have fallen when they compete in foreign currency or gold. In fact, with interest on bank accounts in the generally below the inflation rate, saving Sterling is a loss-making exercise. For example, american coins and gold american eagle is getting more and more valuable in these days.

Bank of IrelandThe Government will signal whether it intends to take away the right of the Bank of Ireland to provide current accounts as well as other banking services in post offices. Under the contract terms, BoI need to offer financial services through the post office network until 2020, drawing half of any profits earned.
Business Minister Pat McFadden and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband will announce the Government’s response to the Post Office banking consultation, which was launched last December.
The venture now has 2.2 million customers and sells about 3,000 credit cards per week. It has been developing a current account for more than a year. However, the consultation of expanding the Post Office’s offer has raised suspicions as it failed to acknowledge the joint venture between BoI and Royal Mail.
But the Government’s plans for post office banking remain ambitious.

US Consumer Spending Rise Slightly

Monday, March 29, 2010 10:58
Posted in category Economic Outlook

US spending levels rise by 0.4% rather than the original forecast of 0.5%. Income was higher than originally reported, rising by 0.3% rather than the original report of 0.1%. According to the Commerce Department, the levels were less robust in January than previously expected.
Economists indicated that, the Americans are gradually changing their spending behavior in the face of large capital losses in investment and real estate portfolios, a weak job market as well as tight credit.
The US job market continues to cut jobs on a monthly basis, although the pace of losses has slowed down. It is believed that the nation’s economy might have created jobs this month. However, even though job opportunities start reappearing, paychecks are expected to remain suppressed as a lot of employers do not have pressure to raise the salaries.
As a result, the spending on durable goods, such as cars and air-conditioners, fell by 0.4% in February. Meanwhile the spending on non-durable goods, such as food and clothing increased by 0.7%. The prices suggest that inflation in the US was largely tame.
