JCB Chief Bemoans Industrial Decline

logo_jcbThe manufacturing sector, which was badly hit by the recession, is forecast to grow thi syear at a rate faster than the whole economy.
Now, only one third of the components in a JCB digger, which is widely seen as a symbol of British manufacturing vigour, are made in the UK.
According to JCB’s chairman—Sir Anthony Bamfor, it is said that the proportion has fallen from 96% to 36% ever since 1979. This reflects the hollowing-out of supply chains by globalisation, takeovers and high taxation.
The company calculated the decline in the British-made element in its best-known product—the yellow backhoe loader, to indicate how thin the UK supply base for heavy engineering has become.

sterlingSterling received some respite, pulling away from a 10-month low against the dollar as stronger-than-expected UK economic data gave the pound a lift.
Figures indicated that the consumer confidence in the UK rose in February to its highest level ever since the start of 2008, while a survey of activity in the UK services sector came in far stronger than forecast, hitting its highest level ever since the beginning of 2007.
The pound also received support on reports that the UK insurer–Prudential might not complete its $35bn purchase of the Asian unit of the stricken US insurer—AIG.
