HMRC Plans Crackdown on Fashion Industry’s Unpaid Interns
Friday, November 18, 2011 18:28Fashion companies like Urban Outfitters have advertised for nine-month unpaid internships. It is believed that this has become certain kind of abuse for the interns. As a result, Revenue and Customs is planning to crackdown such unpaid intern scheme in breach of minimum wage laws.
HMRC has sent a 12-person taskforce to make unannounced inspections of businesses where interns are working as employers rather than just shadowing staff. The special 12-person “dynamic response” unit will have the authority to question managers and sift through accounts until the members are satisfied that no abuse is going on.
