Simon Fox, CEO of retailer HMV, has announced for the very first time that he would consider selling its Waterstone’s book chain, although he also said the disappearance of Waterstone’s was “tragic”.
In the year to April, Waterstone’s hardly make any profit, while the Group turnover increased by 18% to £74.2m after a turnaround in the performance of HMV.
In an interview with the Financial Mail following the company’s results last week, Mr. Fox said: “There would be a tragedy if we do not have one High Street bookseller and we were the last to be successful.

Investors are braced for a clear-out of BP’s leadership as soon as its leaking oil is also limited in the Gulf of Mexico, which could come in the next few weeks. There is a shake-up at the top of the company as some shareholders are critisizing the lack of decisive leadership during the crisis while some others are more supportive.
The management shake-up could be rolled with a capital as a loan or an investment from a strategic shareholder. Pressure for change is building in the run-BP’s second quarter, 27 July, when the company is a statement about the liabilities that they make faces as a result of the accident, most likely in the tens of billions. Without decisive action set to BP on an even keel, the company was vulnerable to opportunistic works offer a rival such as ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell or an approach by a Chinese group, such as PetroChina.

Unions Attack Vintage Thatcher Job Cuts

Sunday, June 27, 2010 7:50
Posted in category Jobs

The future of the labour market became a rhetorical battlegroud as trade unions flayed the chacellor’s vintage Thatcher Budget, but held their fire on the timing of any industrial action over jobs, pay and pensions.
George Osborne cited an optimistic forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility that unemployment currently 2.47m or 7.9 % of the workforce, would peak at 8.1% this year and fall to 6.1% by 2015.
Economists are divided over how far public sector job losses may hold back labour market recovery.

Telephone Tax Dropped in Proposals to Fund Rural Internet

Saturday, June 26, 2010 21:02
Posted in category Banking and Finance

A portion of the BBC licence fee is set to be used to help pay for the construction of high-speed broadband networks in rural areas.
George Osborne said the Con-Lib governement would not introduce the former Labour administration’s plan for a £6 annual tax on users of fixed-line telephones to part-finance new broadband infrastructure in rural areas.
Instead, the coalition is preparing to help pay for superfast broadband networks in the countryside by using a portion of the BBC licence fee earmarked for assisting the transition from analogue to digital television.
The government rejected the telephone tax contained in Labour’s Digital Britain white paper. However, about £800m is coming from the licence fee over five years to help elderly and vulnerable people buy digital TVs or set-top boxes before the analogue broadcast signal is turned off in 2012, and not all of the money is expected to be spent.
The anticipated digital switchover underspend of £350m by the end of 2012 has been earmarked by the government for two broadband projects. Some money will help finance the government’s commitment that all homes should get broadband download speeds of two megabits per second.
Other digital underspend funds will used for three pilot schemes that will look at how best to extend superfast broadband networks to rural areas.

Online Video Ads

Saturday, June 26, 2010 10:21
Posted in category Industry Review

Newspapers mishandled their migration to the internet but broadcasters are making a better fist of it. They are putting more content online either through bespoke websites or third parties such as Hulu and Blinkx, with most relying on advertising to make this work.
So far, so familiar: newspapers also embraced the internet, only to discover online ad prices were meagre and circulation revenues eroded as well. But individual online video ads are olucrative. Advertisers like their brevity, suited to online attention spans, and they cannot be skipped.
According to ad agency GroupM, Hulu’s so-called CPM is about $30, twice that of broadcast television ads. So for free-to-air broadcasters such as the UK’s ITV, suffering a decline in broadcast ad revenues, moving online would seem a no-brainer.
But there are caveats. Viewers tolerate far fewer video ads per program than they do TV, making online less lucratice overall. And if viewers pick only their favourite programmes, it risks shirinking than audience for the rest of the schedule, in the US, Hulu is now considering charges for some contet. UK video advertising is worth a mere £30m, compared with a television market worth £1bn.
