SIG not Insulated from Uncertainty

According to the Sheffield-based company—SIG, uncertainty about the pace of recovery in European construction markets would keep pressure on sales of insulation products for the rest of the year.
The insulation and plasterboard specialist endured a tough start to 2010, as building work all but stopped during the harsh winter that blanketed much of Europe in snow and ice. However, according to SIG, it is said that the anticipated revival in construction activity wa s coming under increasing scrutiny as forecasting groups, such as Euroconstruct, detuned their views on the outlook for the construction market.
On the other hand, non-residential construction has remained subdued across most eurozone countries. So far, there are few signs that commercial or industrial real estate will rebound in the the near future.

In parallel with national efforts, EU countries have asked the European Commission to consider the feasibility of introducing such a tax in Europe and to make suggestions as to how one could be implemented.

Fears of Inflation Prompt S Korean Rate Rise

Prompted by the fears of inflation, South Korea has unexpectedly raised its benchmark interest rate. Seoul joins other Asian countries, which include most recently Malaysia, Taiwan, India and New Zealand, in adjusting to a swift recovery in economic activity.
The Bank of Korea had held interest rates steady at a record low of 2% for 16 months despite the widespread concerns, which include from some South Korean officials, that rates should be raised to avoid overheating.
The IMF joined the chorus earlier this week after an official mission to Seoul, warning of the need to avoid falling behind the curve.

CPI Blow to Final-Salary Plans

Saturday, July 10, 2010 12:51
Posted in category News

Up to 12 million members of final-salary pension schemes face the prospect of a smaller pension, following the government decision to increase payments in line with the consumer price index rather than the retail price index. The advisers now warn that many people may need to start making extra savings from now on.
At present, final-salary schemes are required to increase the pension entitlements of former employees by at least RPI or 2.5%, whichever is the lower. In the past 20 years, RPI has averaged 3.6%. however, the new rules will see the minimum increase change to CPI, which has historically lagged RPI as it doesn’t include housing costs like council tax. CPI has averaged 2.8% in the past 20 years.
Private-sector schemes are allowed to uprate pensions by more than this minimum amount, and the National Association of Pension Funds said some might choose to go on using RPI if it is higher. But pension experts warned that most will use CPI to reduce their scheme liabilities.
