Oil giant BP is reportedly trying to head off a dispute with its Russian joint venture–TNK-BP.
The group sparked anger over a share swap and GBP 10 billion Arctic exploration deal it signed with Rosneft, Russia’s state-controlled oil company. TNK-BP argue the deal breaches its exclusivity agreement. The split has emerged days before BP is expected to unveil its first annual loss ever since 1992 as it counts the cost of the Gulf of Mexico spill.

The takeover battle for Northern Foods took another twist, when the maker of Fox’s Biscuits postpohoned a meeting to approve a GBP342 million offer from chicken magnate Ranjit Boparan.
The Irish rival to Northern–Greencore, which agreed an all-share merger before Boparan’s intervention, is being given more time for a counterid. Boparan is still able to push his deal to Northern shareholders. Greencore will have 46 days to make a counter-offer.

Two of US’s largest consumer product groups reported lower than expected quarterly sales as demand for their brands in developed markets remained sluggish.
P & G, the company behind Gillette razors and Pampers nappies, said that the sales in the last quarter of 2010 rose just 2% compared to a Wall Street forecast of 3%. Things were even slower at Colgate-Palmolive.
The sluggish figures at both groups were partly a result of moves to cut prices and spend more on advertising to win back consumers to more expensive branded products during the recession.
