StanChart to Cut 800 Jobs in South Korea

Sunday, December 18, 2011 9:52
Posted in category Jobs

Standard Chartered is planning to cut down up to 13% of its work force in South Korea. Executives believe that this will turn out to be the last stage of a painful overhaul of costs and corporate culture that sparked the longest banking strike in South Korea.
The attempts of StanChart to improve its profitability in South Korea via introducing performance-related pay sparked a two-month strike over the summer, roiling a banking sector where salaries are traditionally tied to seniority and length of service. Competing banks are watching StanChart’s clash with its union as a test case that could spark broad labour reforms across the whole banking system in South Korea.

Apple and Google in Christmas Showdown

Saturday, December 17, 2011 10:14
Posted in category News

The fight for dominance in the market sector of smartphone has intensified in the key selling period leading up to Christmas, with the fierce contest between Apple and Google’s Android leaving little space for competitors as they battle for supremacy.
The number of devices adapting the Android operating system knocked Apple’s iPhone into the second place in the third quarter, with Samsung, which used to be a minor player in the market only a year ago, overtaking Apple to become the largest seller of smartphones in the world.
Even so, analysts expect Apple to bounce back with exceptionally strong sales in the last quarter running up to Christmas following the launch of the iPhone 4S in October. In both the UK and US, Apple’s iPhone 4S was the most successful phone in the run-up to the holiday season, taking almost one fourth of UK sales in the past two weeks.
