One-in-five of Working Population ‘Economically Inactive’

Figures indicated that the number of people claiming for Jobseeker’s Allowance rose by 23500 in January and reached 1.64 m. There was an increase in the number of long-term unemployed, an increase of 37000 over the last three months to 663000.
The number classified as economically inactive hit an all-time high of 8.08m, which takes up to one fifth of the working age population. Among these, 2.6 million claimed incapacity benefit as they are disabled or too ill to work. The number has tripled ever since 1979.
The headlines figure of people officially classified as unemployed, including those not claiming unemployment benefit, showed a slight decline to 2.46 m. But the experts believe that unemployment will increase again next month as the people who took temporary Christmas work will go back on benefits.
Work and Pensions Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed that more bad news is expected to come, and that the numbers will keep climbing at least until the summer. One-in-five of working population ‘inactive’
