The future success of sustainable building relies on new talent. However, is that talent being well educated?
Most of the time when you check an organization’s website, you will find it has a green patina. References are given with low-energy light-bulbs, and policies encouraging employees to walk or cycle to walk and turn off their PCs when they go home are also post. But do the staffs really have the skills it requires to make sure sustainability runs more than skin deep?
According to a research project lead by the UK-GBC, the provision of sustainability training and education for those working in the built environment sector is provided. Using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, it found people were keen to learn, and that many had attended training courses. Respondents rated 66% of existing courses below par and described feelings of frustration and confusion as they try to meet both their own, and their organization’s training needs.
