Nurses Forced to Buy Their Training
Thursday, April 1, 2010 8:21
According to a new report, it is indicated that the shortages of hospital staff are forcing under-prepared nurses to dip into their own pockets and holiday time for life-saving training.
40% nurses say that they need to pay for their own training in crucial areas like life support, controlling infections and child protection. And according to a Royal College of nursing survey of 3000 frontline staff, it is indicated that one in three has been unable to attend their compulsory training in 2010. Of those nurses unable to attend compulsory training, almost half blamed staff shortages and a lack of replacement cover in hospitals.
Under-pressure ward workers say creeping government cuts are imposing a double whammy of staff shortages and nurses without proper knowledge.
The Department of Health annouced that according to its recent survey of NHS staff, it is shown that four in five had received job-relevant training and staffing levels had never been higher. The number of nurses the NHS employs now stands at more than 415000 while the number of managers is at least 45000.
