According to the products life cycle theory, the tele-communication products are already in the maturity stage.
As a result of wide popularity of the modern communication technology, no tele-communication company can grab the monopoly position in the mobile phone market. Countless different models of phones are provided by different manufacturers, such as Samsung Innov8 i8510, LG Renoir, Nokia N96, Sony Ericsson C905 and so on. Each of them has its distinctive characteristic that help distinguish the products from the competing offerings and encourage preference over competing products from specific groups of customers.
But, although different companies are trying so hard to further develop high added value on the mobile phones and introduce new model of mobile phones to the customers to meet their varified needs, the lever of differentiation between products and service between different companies are still low. The competition between different companies in practice appears to be with similar products. In the mobile telecommunications industry, the battle heats up. The smartphones available are getting cheaper and more featureful.
Due to the fierce competition in the field, the strong growth in sales diminishes accordingly. Cite Nokia for example. Earlier this week, the company just reported a drop of 28 per cent in its third-quarter earnings and a fall by 5 per cent in the revenue, compared to the situation at the same time last year. Meanwhile, its market share of the mobile phone slipped.
At this point, the primary objective of the mobile phone manufacturers is to defend their own market share while maximizing the profit. Distribution becomes more intensive. However, nowadays, people in the supply chain are more reliant on short-term credit. As a result, the mobile phone suppliers are having a more sophisticated analysis of the liquidity of their distributors and suppliers.
