Microsoft to Pay Sites to Drop Google
Tuesday, December 1, 2009 13:59Microsoft has reportedly offered to pay newspaper websites, including those owned by Rupert Murdoch’s Newws Corporation, to remove their content from Google.
The plan, first reported by the blog TechCrunch, comes after News Corp said it was preparing to block Google from accessing content from newspapers including the Times, The Sunday Times, the Sun, the News of the World and the Wall Street Journal. Microsoft and News Corp refused to comment.
It is understood that Microsoft hopes that removing newspaper content from Google will boost traffic to its rival search engine, Bing. The plan would also benefit those newspapers struggling to find a way of profiting from allowing readers free access to their content online.
