1. Your roof collects about 85000 liters of rain each year which then runs straight into the sewers. This could fill 450 water butts with free water. You could then water your plants, clean your windows or wash your car for free. To get a water butt, call your local water company.

2. A running tap wastes over 6 liters of water a minute, so turn off the tap whilst brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your face.

3. Simply washing your fruit and veg in a bowl rather than under a running tap could help you save water effortlessly. Use the leftover water on your houseplants.

4. The average household throws away the equivalent of one in every three bags of food they have, wasting £420 every year. All the more reason to eat all the food you have. Make a list before you shop, plan your meals, check the best before dates and store your food properly to extend its life. Use up your leftovers to save waste, time and money. Yesterday’s roast chicken can become today’s chicken sandwich!

5. Getting a new mobile phone? Don’t bin the old one. Many charities will recycle your old mobile phone and printer cartridges.

6. It’s easy to grow fruit and veg in the garden a window box, an allotment or even an old pair of willies. They’ll taste great and save money. When we throw away food it gets buried in landfill sites and creates methane, a greenhouse gas around 20 times more potent than CO2. Why not make nutrient-rich compost instead, your garden will love you for it!

7. Remember, rubbish if for rubbish bins. Try to avoid flushing away cotton balls and make-up tissues. Throwing them in the bin will cut down on the amount of water that is wasted with every flush.

8. When you’re using the computer at home, save paper by only printing what you really need to and print double sided so less paper is wasted. Reuse scrap paper for notes.

9. Fill a jug with cold water and leave it to cool in your fridge. This way you don’t have to run the tap for ages just to get a cold drink.

10. Use energy saving light bulbs. They last up to around 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and using one can save you around £40 over the lifetime of the bulb. This saving could be around £65 over its lifetime if you’re replacing a high wattage incandescent bulb, or one used for more than a few hours a day.

11. Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1℃ could cut your heating bills by up to 10% and typically saves around £55 per year. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time.

12. A short shower uses around a third of the water a bath does. But beware of power showers; many may actually use more than a bath. You can minimize your water by reusing your bath water to water your house plants or garden. When showering, use a timer to remember how long you’re spending in there, or limit yourself to just two songs!
