Local groups will be given given help to purchase threatened community assets, such as leisure centres, pubs or village shops, under plans to be announced on Monday by the Government.
The new Community Right to Buy meaure in the localism bill will give locals a legal right to nominate vital buildings on a a most wanted council list. If one of these assets is put up for sale, a so-called community countdown will be triggered.
That will give local people time to prepare a business plan and raise funds to bid for the asset.
