How to Protect Yourself

Fraudsters appear to be targeting cheques sent in the post by National Savings & Investment. A warning has been issued to all the Premium Bond holders to be on their guard after their attempt to pay in a cheque triggered a security alert. Premium Bond holders should do a number of things to protect themselves from fraud.
1. Check the monthly list of prizes online to see if you have received all theprizes that are due to you.
2. If you should have received a prize and have not done so, contact NS&I immediately.
3. Make sure that you notify NS&I if you change your name, address or bank account. One of the main reasons why mail does not reach the intended recipient is due to individuals’ failure to notify changes of address.
4. Take special care if you share an address with several other people or if you have a property, such as a student house, which is vacant for several months of the year.
5. Let NS&I know if your security may have been compromised, for example, if you have been burgled or mugged. NS&I can then put additional controls in place to help to minimise the risk of identity theft.
6. Be careful how you dispose of any Premium Bond prize statements—they contain information that could be very useful to a fraudster. The ideal method of disposal is to use a shredder.
7. Never give away personal details to anyone phoning you and claiming to be from NS&I. It would never initiate a phone conversation asking for such details.
8. Do not write down security details such as PINs. They can be exploited all to readily by identity thieves.
