How Distance Education for Working Professionals Differs From other Universities

Nowadays, the term of Distance education or distance learning refers to a field of education that focuses on the pedagogy and andragogy, technology, and instructional systems design that aim to deliver education to people who are not physically “on site”. According to the definition by U.S. Department of Agriculture, it is a process to create and provide access to learning when the source of information and the learners are separated by time and distance, or both. In another word, it is a process that create an educational experience of equal qualitative value for people outside the classroom to best suits their needs. For the ones such as the working professionals, it could be a very convenient way to obtain further education at their spare time.
Along with the recent trend of technological advance, distance learning is becoming more recognized for its potential in providing individualized attention and communication with students internationally.
All kinds of online degree program including public administration degree, could be found in the field. Some institutions are even offering Online phd programs.
So far, there are two kinds of technologies used in distance education—synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous technology is a mode of online delivery where all participants are “present” at the same time, requiring an organized timetable. Asynchronous technology is a mode of online delivery where participants don’t need to be together at the same time, but can access course materials on their own schedule.
