High Street Picks up the Slack as Grocers Falter

Supermarkets suffered a dismal January as department stores, furniture shops and clothing outlets turned the table on the formerly dominant grocers.
According to MasterCard Afdvisors’ Spending-Pulse data, in a complete reversal of the previous trend, the rest of the high street delivered most of the growth in retail spending last month. Total sales rose by 3.8%, but the grocers’ sales increased by only 1.1%, when price rises and new stores are accounted for. This underlies that the volumes might have declined.
