Fears for Cadbury Jobs, Despite Food Giant’s Vow
Sunday, January 24, 2010 18:39American food giant Kraft has renewed its pledge to save Keynsham’s chocolate factory after agreeing an £11.5 billion takeover of Cadbury.
But the company’s final offer, recommended to shareholders by Cadbury directors, does not include a key statement by Kraft’s chairman which had previously put that promise in writing.
Kraft’s September submission for a £10.2bn buy-out contained a reference to the otherwise doomed Somerdale factory by the company’s chief executive and chairman, Irene Rosenfeld, saying she hoped it would continue to operate following any takeover. That comment is absent from the final offer published on Tuesday, which makes no reference to Keynsham at all in a 33-page document.
Kraft has said its commitment to Keynsham still stands, but local MPs have raised concerns over whether the food firm will be able to deliver on its promises. Mr. Dan Norris, whose Wansdyke constituency includes the Somerdale plant, hopes to meet Kraft bosses in the next few days to hold them to a commitment on the 400 jobs remaining there.
