The multinational NVIDIA Corporation is the global famous manufacture of graphics-processor technologies for workstations, desktop computers, and mobile devices etc. The company is a major supplier of integrated circuits used for personal-computer motherboard chipsets, graphics processing units, and game-consoles. Its notable product lines include the GeForce series for gaming and the Quadro series for graphics processing on professional workstations, as well as the nForce series of integrated motherboard-chipsets.
However, the recent news about the thermal failure of its legacy graphics drivers, G84 series, has aroused wide concern from large amount of laptop users. The failure caused various laptop failure. NVidia contributes the failure to be caused by bad chip packaging.
According to estimation, around 18 million laptops with NVidia G84 and G86 graphics chips, which are sold in the past18 months, are experiencing high failure rates. Various laptop models from multiple manufacturers, including Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and other global brands, are affected.
Dell and HP have released BIOS updates, which turn the fan of laptops on more frequently or permanently. However, it’s not of real help. The cynical interpretation is that it can only delay the problem till the warranty has expired. HP is also announcing a replacement of the laptop, which are suffering from such chip failure. However, the problem is the HP models, which are suffering from such problems, are only manufactured in Asia. So, for the oversea students, who’s studying in other continents and suffering from this problems, they can’t get any help from the local support centre.
As a result of this bad news, the stock price of NVidia has dropped dramatically in the last two months.
