The global financial turmoil has struck. However, there’s no shortage of advice on how to come out fighting for success. One of the most interesting ones is to “download a healthy economy”.
As the broadband penetration to a country’s overall economic competitiveness in this era net boom, the importance of broadband investment in the modern world is obvious.
Effective competition and continued liberalizations in broadband infrastructure helps better connect consumers, businesses, and governments and facilitates social interaction. In other words, a completely open and innovative broadband market is the safest bet to make businesses more efficient, governments more accountable, students better educated and prepared for the workplace, and it creates a greater spirit of inclusion for every corner of society.
Considering the great benefits that could be brought forwards by wide net accessibility, there is some urgency for government to step up investment in this infrastructure. Many politicians nowadays are calling for further billions in investment to extend the reach of high-speed net access community by community. In the recently elected president of the local provincials in Rome, Nicola Zingaretti successfully campaigned on a broadband-for-everyone promise. The promise would include the linking up of every home in the area to high-speed net access in the next four years and the creation of 50 centers of tech innovation. Universal broadband has a big backer throughout the campaign of Barack Obama, too.
How important will the development of broadband is for a nation’s overall economic prospects? The next four years may lead a long way towards answering that question.
