Doubt Over Royal Bank Holiday
Monday, January 3, 2011 17:06Business Link, the government’s online support service, has told employers that they might not be obliged to give their staff anextra day’s leave for this year’s royal wedding.
Its website points out that the announcement of an extra bank holiday on April 29 does not increase any entitlement to holiday under the working time regulations, so the question of whether an employee can demand a day off will depend on the wording of their contract.
If an employee’s contract says that they are entitled, for example, to 20 days annual leave in addition to statutory, bank and public holidays, this would potentially mean that they are entitled to an extra day’s paid leave.
