US Car Sales Rise Modestly in October

With replacement demand and improved supplies of Japanese vehicles offseting the economic uncertainty in the US, car sales in the country moved modestly higher in October.
However, both GM and Toyota fell short of expectations. GM is edging up by 1.9% from 2010, while Toyota is posting a 7.8% decline.
On the other hand, Ford sales just obtain a 6% rise and Chrysler gained a 27% rise, signaling the best October in four years for the smallest Detroit carmaker.

VW Heading for Car Industry Crown

This year, the German automaker–Volkswagen is going to become the biggest carmaker in the world. According to forecasts, it is shown that along with Toyota’s supply-chain problems after this year’s earthquake in Japan, VW’s relentless growth around the world will claim the first spot for both sales and production.
If the result come out by year-end tallies, it would mark an upset in the fiercely competitive industry where Toyota and GM have been occupying the first place for the past several years. The world’s biggest drinks firm–Diageo has unveiled a major shake-up of its drinks business that could witness the loss of hundreds of jobs in Europe as the group focuses on driving growth in the booming African and Latin American economies where the sales were up by 17% and 10% respectively.
According to the maker of Smirnoff and Guinness, it is announced that it has started to consult staff about potential redundancies as it shifts resources to emerging markets.
The radical restructuring plans were announced by Chief executive Paul Walsh. It will be focusing on diverting more resources into growth areas while slashing costs in stagnant developed countries.

Newspapers mishandled their migration to the internet but broadcasters are making a better fist of it. They are putting more content online either through bespoke websites or third parties such as Hulu and Blinkx, with most relying on advertising to make this work.
So far, so familiar: newspapers also embraced the internet, only to discover online ad prices were meagre and circulation revenues eroded as well. But individual online video ads are olucrative. Advertisers like their brevity, suited to online attention spans, and they cannot be skipped.
According to ad agency GroupM, Hulu’s so-called CPM is about $30, twice that of broadcast television ads. So for free-to-air broadcasters such as the UK’s ITV, suffering a decline in broadcast ad revenues, moving online would seem a no-brainer.
But there are caveats. Viewers tolerate far fewer video ads per program than they do TV, making online less lucratice overall. And if viewers pick only their favourite programmes, it risks shirinking than audience for the rest of the schedule, in the US, Hulu is now considering charges for some contet. UK video advertising is worth a mere £30m, compared with a television market worth £1bn.

As the UK becomes the latest country to try a little austerity, it is ever clearer that there is little room left for high-minded public policy when cash is at stake.
In the US, for instance, possible new regulation and prohibition against menthol cigarettes seems likely to be stubbed out.
The $4.5bn of federl taxes from menthols, and $6.8bn in sales and excise duties paid to states, are powerful reasons to live and let live.
Campaigners for regulating and taxing currently illegal drugs are also starting to find a sympathetic hearing from politicians. Meanwhile, liberalising gambling is less radical and easier to pass.
At the same time, several states are already loosening restrictions, and the House financial services committee is considering bringing online betting onshore.
Chief among these would-be sins is poker, which is banned unexpectedly in 2006 by an amendment to legislation on port security. Listed European poker sites were foced to withdraw but private companies have continued to operate surreptitiously in a US market that has now grown to about $5bn of online gambling revenues annually. It is estimated that the market would grow to $12bn to $16bn by 2014 with federal regulation.
A return to the world’s largest market would also do wonderful things to share prices for the listed online gambling operators.
