The goal of research is to produce new knowledge, which takes three main forms:
1. Exploratory Research (structure and identify new problems)
Such type of research is often conducted as a problem has not been clearly define. Often relied on secondary data such as reviewing available literature and/or data; or qualitative approach such as informal discussion with managers, etc.

2. Constructive Research (most computer science research)
This approach demands a form of validation that doesn’t need to be quite as empirically based as in other types of researches such as exploratory research.
But the conclusion need to be objectively argued and defined.
Construct can be a new theory, algorithm, model, software, or a framework.

3. Empirical Research (bases its funding on direct/indirect observation as its tests of reality)
This approach attepts to describe accurately the interaction between the instrument or the human sense and the entity being observed.
In particular, the accumulation of evidence for or against any particular theory involves planned research designs for collection of emppirical data.

Research can fall into 2 distinct types:

1) Primary Research (field research)
This type of research invoves the collection of data that does not already exist. This can be through numerous forms, including questionnaires and telephone interviews.

2) Secondary Research (desk research)
It involves the summary, collection and/or synthesis of existing research rather than primary research.

Both types of research are widely used in market research plan.
