British Gas Offers to End Estimated Readings
Thursday, December 3, 2009 2:58British Gas is to axe estimated bills following complaints from customers that they have been paying for unused energy.
Those who sign up for the EnergySmart scheme will have to send a monthly gas or electricity meter reading via email or text.
They’ll then pay based on how much energy they have used. Spot checks will be carried out to ensure the customer is supplying a correct meter reading.
EnergySmart’s tariff is slightly lower than the standard figure, while there is no fee to sign up. It is expected to be welcomed by millions who get estimates every three months.
These can be be widely inaccurate as, under current legislation, energy firms are required to carry out a meter reading only every two years.
The move follows a call by consumer group Which? for the Office of Fair Trading to Investigate inaccurate estimated bills. Which? Said that 30% of its members have been contacted by their energy supplier demanding additional money to cover supposed underpayments.
