According to Alternative Networks—the communications services providers, Telecoms Smartphones such as the BlackBerry are no longer the exclusive preserve of City types.
The company, which provides fixed, mobile and data telecommunications services, said that it had noticed a significant rise in the take-up of such devices among the wider consumer market. James Murray, chief executive, said that usage had also been boosted by newer and cheaper handsets that are competing with Apple’s iPhone. He said that the number of converged devices sold by Alternative Networks during the past year had risen by more than 40%, to more than 15,000 connections, which meant that they accounted for more than one in four connections supplied by the company.
Mr. Murray said that he expects the trend to continue as the iPhone becomes available across more mobile networks and with the launch of new models of the BlackBerry Storm and Bold. Despite this, the company’s full-year sales fell by 4% to £89.7 million. Full-year pre-tax profits fell by 20% to £7.1 million.
